Abstract:
|
This paper explores the relationship between culture, ethics and psychology by focusing on individuals’ involvement with modern social and religious movements. It examines the goals and practices of three groups of women living in Egypt today: 1) participants in a fast-expanding Islamic piety movement; 2) secular feminists; and 3) Islamic feminists, along with a control group of "ordinary" women. The paper draws on sociocultural and psychological data from recent ethnographic fieldwork in order to examine the ways that various factors intersect and influence women’s decisions, practices and adaptations. |
