In this paper I discuss the racial disparities in New York City's most selective public high schools and explore how egalitarians should regard them.

Elites are much more likely to understand the needs of underserved communities and to be responsive to them if some of their ranks come from these segments of the population and if they grew to know people from diverse backgrounds in an intimate classroom setting during their formative years. It follows that a multi-faceted admissions policy that is more thoughtful and more nuanced is essential for public institutions like New York City’s specialized high schools.
