Abstract:

Using literature on transnational social movements, the paper analyzes anti-sex trafficking movement of Bangladesh. It examines the connection between the current wave globalization and sex-trafficking. It analyzes political opportunities and threats provided by international and regional institutions and events for transnational activities around which activists of anti-trafficking movement of Bangladesh organize themselves. Drawing on reports of NGOs and international organizations and based on interview data, it explores how national and regional advocacy networks helped to spread international norms protecting women’s and children’s basic human rights and had laid the groundwork for transnational action against forced trafficking in women and children. The paper examines how transnational linkages spawned a variety of new networks within South Asia. It documents that these new networks contributed to building broader movements and played a crucial role in anti-sex trafficking movements of Bangladesh. . Participant observation method was used to collect information on the dynamics of national and regional scales of activism. The paper demonstrates the ability of the activists of the global South to build regional coalitions within the South by which they successfully challenge their target and the development of anti-trafficking laws in Bangaldesh.
