Abstract:

This study explores informal political participation among non-citizens and compares such participation with citizens. Informal political participation is measured using a 7-point “protest” scale based on participation in rallies, protests, marches, and other acts aimed at policy reform, as well as participation in labor unions, ethnic organizations, and political groups. Linear regressions are run on data from the Social Capital Benchmark Survey (n=28,975). Overall levels of informal political activity are low for both citizens and non-citizens. After controlling for age, sex, race, family structure, level of education, length of residency, and ethnic and racial composition of the community, citizenship status is statistically significant with non-citizens scoring about one half-point lower than citizens. Level of education, length of residency in the local community, and the percentage of Asian residents in the community are all statistically significant positive predictors of the protest score.
