Abstract:
|
The publication of Thomas Homer-Dixon's paper "On the Threshold:Environmental Changes As Causes of Acute Conflict" in International Security in 1991 initiated a vigorous international research program on therelationship between environmental stress in poor countries -- especially shortages of cropland, fresh water, and forest resources -- and civil violence. The current paper will review the progress of research since then, synthesize across the competing intellectual and methodological perspectives in the field, suggest where the original hypotheses were correct and incorrect, identify areas of major agreement and disagreement, and identify key lacuna in our current understanding that should be targets for future research. |

| THE NECESSITY OF COMPLEXITY: Taking environmental-conflict research beyond mechanism By Thomas Homer-Dixon Tom Deligiannis and Dirk Druet International Studies Association Annual Conference Chicago February 28 2007 In the sixteen years since the publication of On the Threshold (Homer-Dixon 1991) hundreds of scholarly papers and books written by researchers around the world have examined whether it is possible to identify non-trivial generalizations about causal relationships between environmental scarcity and civil violence in poor countries. This work has been contentious and |
