Abstract:

We analyze the expectations of parenting and intimate partnership held by college students of Mexican origin. These students are likely to be included in the largest minority group of the future. Knowing their expectations of parenting and partnership is critical for planning future policy and for understanding effectiveness of civil and criminal codes that govern family relations. Additionally, we compare these expectations to those held by to Anglo American college students to identify cultural differences which will better inform changes in current law and policy. Data were collected from approximately 1000 college students enrolled in classes at two universities located in the southwestern region of the United States. The analysis examines 1) parenting and partner expectations and methods of transmission of these expectations as they vary by gender, citizenship (USA or Mexico), race/ethnicity, social class, religion, number of children, and marital status; 2) the effect of gender in regard to conversation containing childrearing issues as a means of cultural transmission; and 3) the effects of age, gender, and religion on perceptions of males as able to identify and attend to the needs of children. We argue that cultural variation in expectations of parenting and partnership must be incorporated into future policy and law, especially when these individuals are likely to become a significant portion of U. S. families in the future.
