Abstract:
|
Yhis paper explores the quantity, quality, and context of leisure time as
experienced by single mothers. I first examine quantities of free time
using data from the 2003-2005 American Time Use Surveys, and find that
single mothers vary by household structure in the quantity of free time
they experience. These differences are largely due to demographic.
compositional differences between household living arrangements.
Qualitative data is then used to explore the quality of leisure
experiences for these mothers, and how context shapes their thinking and
categorization of their time. Pilot interviews suggest again that
household composition and structure affect how single mothers think about
their time and what they consider to be leisure. Other themes from the
interviews include leisure as identity maintenance, sleep as leisure,
social isolation, and guilt. |
