Abstract:

In this paper I will present a sociological model in which to develop the religious social imagination as an ideal-typic religious-political culture model. The model is used to theorize how the religious social imagination is bounded and the resulting constraints permit or limit the political and social opportunity structures which each religion inhabits. My goal is to present the idea that international religious doctrine becomes contextualized and becomes nationalized in political and social cultural elements to varying degrees within the orientations of the religious social imagination of the specific traditions. The model will help in understanding why different religious traditions operate in varying ways in different political cultures-- particularly the limits of their imaginary capacities for social change.
