Abstract:
|
Variations among immigrant organizations in the US result not only from
differences in the demographic characteristics of the immigrant
populations but also from the different patterns of civic and political
association in the immigrants' countries of origin. We analyze Colombian,
Dominican and Mexican associations and show how the historical relations
between the state and civil society and the home country's resulting
patterns of civic and political association contribute significantly to
the form taken by immigrant organizations in the US. |
