Abstract:

To date, most of the published work on ‘social capital’ has involved large quantitative studies that, through necessity, have used indicators that sometimes have a rather tenuous relationship with what is actually happening in relation to how social capital is generated and utilised in small rural communities. In this paper we explore the degree to which social networks, bonds and ties (both “weak” and “strong”), civic participation, voluntary engagements and various other formal and informal expressions of social capital contribute to the well-being or otherwise of two small rural communities experiencing changing industry circumstances with the closure of their previously core and iconic logging industry. We then discuss these findings in relation to information generated from an analysis of available quantitative data relating to community composition and change over time. |
