Abstract:
|
Understanding the educational, occupational, and residential aspirations of rural youth is important to understanding the persistent out-migration of youth workers from rural areas. However, research has not examined whether adolescents employed specifically in agricultural work differ from other rural adolescents with respect to their educational, occupational, and residential aspirations. This study contrasted the educational, occupational, and residential aspirations of rural adolescents aged 16 and 17 (11th graders) in 2004-2005 who were (1) seasonal agricultural workers, (2) employed in non-agricultural jobs, or (3) unemployed. Data collected from youth employees in a national study of youth agricultural employment skills were combined with data collected from a sample of Pennsylvania youth. Controlling for other predictors of aspirations, binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses was used to assess the effects of the different employment contexts on the odds of aspiring to postsecondary education, professional versus other occupational type, and rural residence. |
