Abstract:

This experiment examined effects of violent video games, affective orientation, and empathy on aggression. Participants completed measures of the traits and weeks later played a video game in a lab. Results indicate that participants who played a violent vs. nonviolent game behaved more aggressively but experienced less arousal; game condition interacted with affective orientation and empathy to predict aggressive affect and arousal; and participants’ internal states did not mediate video games’ effects on aggressive behavior.
