Abstract:

Studies have examined use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) by reticent individuals, focusing on email or on-line communication in general, but usage of instant messaging (IM) has not been addressed. Results show that reticence is associated with positive affect for IM, high- and low-reticents compare in usage, and IM narrows the competence gap between high and low reticents that exists face-to-face, and that the synchronous vs. asynchronous dichotomy may be more appropriately viewed as a continuum.
