Abstract:

This paper examines Condoleezza Rice’s opening remarks before the National Commission for Investigation of Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, on April 8, 2004, as they pertain to the genre of apologia. In addition to rhetorical analyses of Rice’s strategies from the perspective of established apologia theory, this essay proposes alternate criteria to apply to rhetors responding to multiple accusations within the course of a single speech. This new perspective argues that two types of exigence, direct attacks from another individual and circumstances of the rhetor’s own creation, influence rhetors’ choices and counter the applicability of previously established apologia strategies and postures to these types of speeches. This paper also counters assertions that only one exigence motivates or dominates a rhetorical act.
