Abstract:

This paper is a study of the communication between children and their parents who were either incarcerated or on a military assignment. The author interviewed families (54 parents and children) which had a parent leave their partner and child(ren) for 2 months or longer using uncertainty reduction/management as a general framework for analysis. Results illustrate pre-separation communication (i.e., transition planning and creative communication) can help children and their parents ease into the distal separation.
