Abstract:
|
This paper examines how Nautanki, a popular community folk performance tradition of northern India, is being affected by inroads made by mass media and new media technologies such as television, cinema, audio cassettes, and video compact discs in rural India. The paper uses my own experiences and field research as a Nautanki performer to explore how the social and entertainment roles of community performing traditions such as Nautanki are different from those of mass media. |
