Abstract:

The current paper seeks to expand upon the literature on romantic relationship termination by advancing a parallel process model outlining a motivation process and an ability process in the formation of termination messages. The proposed model explains the cognitive processes of the message sender which determine their motivation to be polite in ending the romantic relationship and their ability to craft an effective polite termination message if they are motivated to do so.
