Abstract:

This study investigated the relationships between parental conversation- and conformity-orientation, and children’s perceptions of other aspects of the parent-child relationship, including confirmation and disconfirmation, affection, aggressive potential, and closeness. We also examined the relationship between parental communication and children’s self-esteem. Laissez-faire and protective parent communication styles were associated with poorer outcomes for their children than were consensual or pluralistic styles
