Abstract:
|
This paper examines the identities of secondary school students from twenty-one schools in twelve towns in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) and Croatia that vary in their curriculum usage and segregation levels, using data collected in May 2004 and May 2005 with an original survey instrument (N = 4,457). It asks, What effects do different schooling policies and practices have on the identities of students? Specifically, does the organization of schooling and the curriculum in use affect the strength of students' ethno-national and state identities? The survey was designed to measure the multiple and often conflicting dimensions of identity in BiH and Croatia, including, most importantly, separate items to gauge individuals' identification with their ethno-national group as opposed to their identification with the state in which they live. This paper employs structural equation modeling to examine the determinants of the strength of individuals' identities. The analyses reveal that differences in the organization of a school and the curriculum it uses are associated with profound differences in its students' identities. What is more, these effects seem to vary between the groups in BiH and Croatia. The most striking of these differences is the opposite effects associated with attending school in the other group's curriculum found among Bosniak and Croatian students from both countries. |
