Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Previous studies have provided support for power-control theory by showing a penchant for risk among women reared in egalitarian families. However, there have been no empirical studies that have directly investigated whether this general risk preference leads to actual risk-taking behaviors of women in adulthood. The main purpose of this study is to extend power-control theory to both pro- and anti-social forms of risk taking among women in South Korea. We compare women who enter traditionally male-dominated occupations (police officers and physicians) with women who have committed various crimes. Furthermore, we compare women incarcerated for intimate partner homicide to other female offenders. Unlike other female criminals, women who killed their partners are expected to have lower affinity for risk and strong patriarchal attitudes which may inhibit them from leaving abusive relationships. This research explores implications for future studies.
