Abstract:
|
The purpose of this study is to determine whether prompt and sympathetic response by police affects subsequent emotional and psychological reactions by victims of residential burglary. Research has shown that the emotional consequences to burglary victims is often similair to that of victims of violent crimes. Our study found that the initial emotional symptoms of residential burglary victims include fear, anger, guilt, resentment, shame, grief and mood swings--symptoms identical to tjhose of victims of assault, rape and other violent crimes. The study further found that the way in which responding police officers dealt with these victims, had a significant impact on subsequent emotional sym, ptpoms and upon how the victims viewed police. |
