Abstract:

Ongoing labor issues and strife marked the early to mid-1900s in Pennsylvania’s west central bituminous coal fields. This case study of union activism, ethnic conflict, and the role of state and private (coal and iron police) criminal justice agencies focuses on the communities of Nanty Glo and Vintondale, PA. The author’s current research on central Montana coal communities (Stockett, and Belt, MT) will serve as a basis for comparing the role of geography, population density and ethnic assimilation, and coal/copper company power in the unfolding of labor strife, ethnic intimidation, and criminal justice response during this time period.
