Abstract:
|
Over the past decade, the advent of multi-level statistical techniques in criminology has resulted in a rapid expansion of research concerning environmental influences on criminality. More specifically, research on school-level disorder and delinquency has made a series of advancements (Gottfredson, 2001; Payne, 2004). Drawing from Sampson’s social disorganization theory and Gottfredson’s work on school climate, this paper examines the link between official school discipline referral data and self-reported alcohol use and related delinquent behaviors. Multi-level modeling of the data suggests a relationship between school-level variables, peer influence, and delinquency. The paper includes identification and discussion of the theoretical and policy implications raised from its findings. |
