Abstract:

Development scholars have long acknowledged the role mass media play in communication and development. Cross-national studies of the relationships among political freedom, economic freedom, and economic growth and well-being have been reported in the literature for a quarter century. Enough longitudinal data is now available on press freedom to add this measure to the mix. The author uses vector-autoregression (VAR) and OLS regression to test a set of Granger-causality hypotheses for 115 countries on data collected since the 1970s.
He finds that in non-industrial countries (especially Africa and Latin America), press freedom may Granger-cause economic well-being but economic well-being does not Granger-cause press freedom. The direction of causality is confirmed by both the VAR and OLS equations. Two lags are employed in the analysis. This is true when the measure of economic well-being is the rate of economic growth. When the measure of economic well-being neither is the natural log of GDP per capita, economic well-being nor press freedom Granger-causes the other.
