Abstract:
|
Consistency and change in the public image of two Middle Eastern leaders were investigated in connection with the recent Lebanon war: the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Hezbollah Secretary-General in Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah. It was assumed that while each leader would maintain his basic public image, despite his role as political leader in the last Lebanon war, these images would also reflect their performance during this war. A bi-polar questionnaire including 32 characteristics of a leader was administered to two samples of students. The effects of the war could be assessed as the research questionnaires to the first group (N=230) were administered about three weeks before the war, and they were administered to the second sample (N=259) about three weeks after the war. Factor analysis conducted on these items pointed at two distinct leader images: crisis or wartime leader, and peacetime leader. Comparison of the two leaders' images revealed that Nasrallah was regarded as a wartime leader, while Olmert was evaluated as a peacetime leader, both before and after the war. The image of Nasrallah was enhanced following the war whereas the image of Olmert tended to be diminished after the war. This effect mainly characterized their wartime leader image, and more marginally affected their peacetime leader image. Significant but low correlations were found between participants' religiosity and political attitudes and Olmert's image. No significant correlations linked these variables with Nasrallah's image. |
