Abstract:
|
Distrust has been recognised as one of the most crucial concepts in conflict resolution (Kelman, 2005) and has been incorporated in multi-level models explaining the constituents and the dynamics of conflict (Fisher, 1990). Emotions, on the other hand, have been largely neglected in the literature of conflict resolution and have received little interest in the literature of trust. The present study expanded theoretically and tested some aspects of the ??eclectic? conflict resolution model of Fisher (1990) in the context of inter-group conflict in Cyprus. In addition to the factors included in Fisher??s (1990) model, the study assumed a distinction between material and symbolic threat, social and political trust and explored the role played by emotions associated with constructions of the historical and present relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Thus, the study explored the direct relationship of political and social trust with issues of threat, identity, cultural differences/commonalities, conflict of interests, values and needs, history of antagonism and also emotions. It used a survey methodology to collect data from 300 Greek Cypriot adolescents. The findings partially confirm the hypotheses and principles of the ??eclectic? model and demonstrate the significance of taking into account people??s emotional reactions to the conflict in addition to their cognitions in attempting to understand willingness to accept particular forms of conflict resolution. |
