Abstract:

Project ACtion for Equity (ACE) is an academic service learning project for college students in teacher preparation courses of study, driven by a long-term vision and plan of action developed collaboratively by school-university-community partners located on the U.S./Mexico border. The project and its activities are designed to enhance educational and career opportunities for Hispanic girls and women who suffer multiple forms of oppression based on gender, race, ethnic origin, limited English proficiency and socioeconomic status. ACE is also a critical component in the College of Education’s paradigm shift, focused on enhancing pre-service teachers’ knowledge and understanding of inequities in the public school system through infusion of a service-learning program design.
This presentation engages the audience in discussion of the College of Education’s evolving vision and goals as the institution integrates Project ACE and its service-learning focus into program design and delivery. This “new” vision for teacher preparation includes integration of a community-focused component addressing the gender and social inequities experienced by female students in the schools and communities of the border region between southwestern Texas and northern Mexico. Project ACE has recently completed its second year of operation, and the program and its activities build on solid, sustained partnerships (twenty-one years or more) of committed community action and documented outcomes resulting from the combination of service and learning. Working in the context of a predominately Hispanic community, with many low income, high need schools, Project ACE also illustrates the remarkable potential for universities to play a key role in developing educational pathways for underrepresented populations (such as Hispanic girls/women) to achieve their full educational potential.
Participants in this session will engage in dialogue on the processes and outcomes of this sustainable partnership project that has already demonstrated how communities and universities can work together to make a difference. |
