Predictors of Non-medical Prescription Drug Use: An Examination with a National Sample of College Students

Abstract:

There is an abundance of research on substance use among adolescents and young adults, especially high school and college students. Current research indicates a tremendous increase in non-medical prescription drug use, defined as use without a prescription or solely for the feeling or experience caused by the drug, in this population. In spite of this recent trend, there is a dearth of research on non-medical prescription drug use. To fill an important gap in the literature the current study uses the 2001 College Alcohol Study, a sample of over 10,000 students at more than 100 institutions across the country, to examine the prevalence and correlates of non-medical prescription drug use. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine predictors of substance use among college students who report using only traditional “street” drugs and students who report non-medical prescription drug use only. Findings indicate that there are unique predictors of non-medical prescription drug use.
