Abstract:

In this paper we take advantage of newly available data provided by WomanStats to 1) suggest a quantifiable approach to scaling the prevalence of domestic violence and to 2) suggest a model of those factors that account for different levels of domestic violence cross-nationally. We specifically draw from the human rights literature to determine which economic, cultural and political factors explain different levels of domestic violence globally today. We find that democratization and the presence of women in parliaments are associated with decreased prevalence of domestic violence, while economic inequality and Islamitization increase the prevalence. However, two common explanatory factors show little to no effect, notably the percentage of women in the labor force and adoption of world cultures.
