Abstract:

The state is a central concept in the study of politics but has had an unstable career in political science. This essay examines the contributions by political scientists, historians, sociologists, and anthropologists to the study of state formation. The goal is to take stock of recent findings that address questions of concern to political science. Despite the impressive growth of the literature on state formation in the last decade, few efforts have been made to compare the findings across sub-disciplinary or geographical boundaries. In the concluding section, I will discuss how the literature transcends earlier criticisms of the concept of the state and will make an appeal for political scientists to take the state seriously.

Where History Meets Political Science: Studying the State and State Formation by Tuong Vu Assistant Professor Department of Political Science University of Oregon Eugene OR August 10 2007 vhtuong@yahoo.com Paper to be delivered at the Annual Meeting of the APSA Chicago August 30- September 1 2007 Draft—Please do not quote without author’s prior permission Introduction The state is a central concept in the study of politics but has had an unstable career in political science. The concept dominated scholarship
literature on state formation is indeed useful as I argue political scientists have much to gain by making an effort to meet history on this ground. 96 See Dvora Yanow “Neither Rigorous Nor Objective?
