Abstract:
|
Previous research on the 2002 House elections suggests that President Bush strategically campaigned for candidates in close races and that the President’s visits positively affected the electoral prospects of the candidates for whom he campaigned. We extend our previous analysis to all of the off-year House elections from 1990 to 2006. This sample of races provides us with the opportunity to investigate the distinctiveness of presidential visitation strategies during periods of divided government and periods of united government and the potentially distinctive electoral effects of presidential campaign visits during these different institutional/partisan contexts. Our results indicate that presidents facing a House controlled by the opposition party tend to have quite different visitation strategies than presidents during united government; we also find that the visits during these distinctive campaigns have different electoral effects. |

| between the relevant variable and the likelihood of a presidential visit and vice versa. 12 As we have structured these models spending is driving presidential visits. However given the timetable of candidate and opponent spending (throughout the campaign) and the timetable of presidential visits (also throughout the campaign) it is possible that causal arrow should be facing the other direction. It’s entirely possible that presidential visits (1) boosted candidate campaign funds (and thus candidate spending) and (2) depressed opponent |
