to the transcendent. In dell’Ambizione as well as in his other works Machiavelli does not criticize the pursuit of desires that are condemned by Christian and classical conceptions of virtue. Rather he not only promotes the pursuit of one’s desires but he also instructs one on how to be successful in this pursuit.
