Abstract:

This paper analyzes the importance of party identification and leader effects in voting behavior in
Albania using data from the 2005 Albanian Election Study (AES). It reviews previous work on party identification
and leader effects in other democracies and compares several statistical models measuring their importance for the main political parties and their leaders among different segments of the Albanian electorate. Results suggest
that leader effects are strong determinants of voting behavior in Albania, and may have played a pivotal role in
the 2005 parliamentary election.
