Abstract:

Etty Hillesum died at the age of twenty-nine in Auschwitz midway through WW II. All her energy had been absorbed in a daily search for the meaning of her life, for an understanding of her relationships with others, and for an insight into the ultimate purpose of each individuals contribution to the well being and maintenance of the human spirit. This paper is a Voegelinian exploration of the shifts in the mode of Hillesums human responsiveness to the divine presence. Voegelins philosophical analysis is especially helpful in clarifying what is taking place in her soul, as she was undergoing significant breakthroughs in her spiritual life in the context of a period of overwhelming social disorder. What starts out as a diary of self-analysis undertaken for therapeutic reasons begins to break out into an interior conversation with a transcendent Other encountered as a Presence immanent within the Center of her inmost being. Living a Heaven in Hell, Hillesum discovered and lived out a paradigmatic response to the ideological mass-murder she could see was soon to devour her. With Voegelins philosophical thought as a guideline, leading us to the heart of Hillesums mystical thought, this paper suggests that Etty Hillesums life and writings have provided us a welcome antidote to the restless and wandering spirit of a complex and turbulent era.
