Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Etty Hillesum died at the age of twenty-nine in Auschwitz midway through WW II. All her energy had been absorbed in a daily search for the meaning of her life, for an understanding of her relationships with others, and for an insight into the ultimate purpose of each individual�s contribution to the well being and maintenance of the human spirit. This paper is a Voegelinian exploration of the shifts in the mode of Hillesum�s human responsiveness to the divine presence. Voegelin�s philosophical analysis is especially helpful in clarifying what is taking place in her soul, as she was undergoing significant breakthroughs in her spiritual life in the context of a period of overwhelming social disorder. What starts out as a diary of self-analysis undertaken for therapeutic reasons begins to break out into an interior conversation with a transcendent Other encountered as a Presence immanent within the Center of her inmost being. Living a �Heaven in Hell,�� Hillesum discovered and lived out a paradigmatic response to the ideological mass-murder she could see was soon to devour her. With Voegelin�s philosophical thought as a guideline, leading us to the heart of Hillesum�s mystical thought, this paper suggests that Etty Hillesum�s life and writings have provided us a welcome antidote to the restless and wandering spirit of a complex and turbulent era.
