Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: This study investigates several propositions derived from Gottfredson and Hirschi’s (1990) general theory of crime. Using data from a random sampling of respondents who live in three census tracts in Wake County, North Carolina, this research not only replicates but also extends prior work concerning the racial generality of self-control theory. Consistent with the theory, the results suggest that low self-control is positively associated with offending. However, support for the theory is not unequivocal. Implications of the findings for the theory are discussed. |
