Abstract:

Although the peaceful effect of democracy has been one of the most prolific research topic in IR scholarship, some doubts still remains unresolved about whether the observed remarkable empirical regularity reflects the entire causal relationship. One counter-argument is that the causal arrow is reversed, that is peace causes democracy rather than vice versa. From this perspective, therefore, it should be noted that the exploration of the causal relationship of the democratic peace is not complete until the reversed causation is taken into consideration. It is so because if the reversed causal relationship turns out real, it consequently suggests that the influence of regime type on international conflict behavior is spurious or at least exaggerated.
In this context, this study aims to identify the reversed causal relationship of the democratic peace proposition and to examine the influence of peace or international conflict on democracy. Especially, this study will attempt to address two questions: 1)whether or not international conflict has significant impact on democracy; 2)under what conditions its impact is greater. This study will try to argue that peace promotes democracy, while international conflict undermines democracy and that the negative impact of international conflict is greater for the weak states than for the strong states. |
