Abstract:

In response to the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, research on the identification and prevention of prison sexual assault has burgeoned. However, little is known about risk for prison sexual victimization among female inmates. As such, the current study examined a predictive model of risk for prison sexual victimization among women. Approximately 168 female prisoners completed questionnaires assessing prison sexual victimization, emotion dysregulation, sexual assertiveness, and rape-related cognitive distortions. Results indicated that only sexual victimization during a prior incarceration and emotion dysregulation significantly predicted current sexual victimization. Implications for prison sexual assault prevention programs will be discussed.
