Abstract:

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who work in the public and private sectors have similar training and job tasks, but the variations in their job conditions may be related to differences in job satisfaction, group cohesion, and other aspects of their experiences of work. As privatization, and its reverse, continue to affect the delivery of public health and safety services, a multi-method examination of the differences between public and private EMT jobs highlights the consequences of these processes for workers. Problems of pay, schedule equity, and job security are among the concerns that EMTs emphasize as they examine the rewards of work in the public sector.

Far less attention has been paid to reverse privatization or the shifting of service provision from the private sector to the public domain.
