Abstract:
|
Using survey data gathered across eight years (1999 to 2007) from the four principle communities in the Heber Valley (site of the February 2002 Soldier Hollow Salt Lake City, Utah Olympic cross-country skiing venue); this paper will examine how residents of small communities have been affected by a short-term but large-scale “mega-event”—the winter Olympics. The survey data was gathered every February from 1999 to 2003, with the 2002 winter Olympics occurring in February, the final wave of data was gathered in 2007 as a five year follow up to the Olympics. Literature on the impacts of mega-events is scarce and tends to focus almost exclusively on the impacts of tourism while literature on social impacts in rural boomtowns is established and rich. Given the apparent generic similarities between the two types of communities, one may assume the possibility of a variety of similarities in impacts as well. However, this remains an untested assumption. |
