Abstract:

The objective of this poster session is to offer some cross cultural comparative observations about students’ attitude and behavior in teaching and learning about globalization and localization in International Relations (IR) courses. With the help of a research assistant, this work is based on the author experience with teaching IR courses which addresses the subjects of globalization and localization. The topic is significant from research as well as teaching perspectives, especially in a cross cultural context. Methodology, students’ attitude and behavior toward the notion of globalization and localization have been measured by survey questionnaires which entail 25 background questions as well as 25 questions about students’ views, actions, education, and habits. The surveys have been conducted in the USA, Russia, and Turkey. Using SPSS, the results are tabulated to observe the impact of teaching and learning about globalization in IR courses. Moreover, pre- and post surveys are completed in each class and data will be analyzed in both intra and inter country context to observe the cross cultural impacts. This poster presentation addresses a number of basic questions, such as: Did teaching about globalization made any difference about students’ view and behavior? Are students aware of the challenges and benefits associated with globalization process? Do the perceived benefits have a cross cultural context? What are the major benefits of teaching about globalization to students? What were the main teaching and learning challenges? What do we instructors learn from such findings? How can we improve the effectiveness of our IR course delivery?
