Abstract:

This paper examines different approaches to regionalism among China, Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in their commitments to the development of the Mekong region. ASEAN has pushed forwards collective programmes to sustain the sound development of the Mekong region. However, the members’ contributions to the programmes showed significant disparity. ASEAN’s essential limitations to coordinating the members’ interests allowed diverse commitments to the ASEAN divide problem. The Chinese government located close links with the Mekong region as a key to advance the development of its southern areas. The Japanese government pushed forwards the new policies designed to foster direct linkages with the Mekong countries by combining commercial arrangements, formal institutions, financial resources and normative ideas.
