Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: In the literature on international security, most specialists assume that the state and the nation must coincide in order to reach regional stability. This apparent confluence is analyzed in the specific literature as a very positive outcome. However, if one focuses on young states, one can observe that the drive towards this convergence may also lead to situations of domestic instability and transboundary conflicts. This paper departs from the weak-state explanation that is currently been put forward in the general literature and will propose an alternative explanation to the causes of these conflicts. This article, which will focus on Ivory Coast and the Kosovo crisis, will analyze how state-building and nation-making may sometimes be understood as two conflicting, rather than complementary, processes that may lead to a situation of conflict. |
