Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: It is now well-known that Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War is a conflicted, self-contradictory text. Yet, IR scholars still claim Thucydides as a center for, and progenitor of, our myriad theoretical approaches to global political life. Regularly, contradictions in the text are willfully ignored as Thucydides is portrayed as the founder and first practitioner of our modern approaches. Why do we insist on these paternity claims? What is the point of these performances?I contend that to speak the name “Thucydides” and interpret his text is to offer some version of theory that must assume one or another institutional form. The act of Thucydides-interpretation in IR reinforces the desire for a disciplinary center, and Thucydides functions as that center. Therefore, interpreting Thucydides is obedience to “the Law” in the Derridean sense. The act of interpretation reproduces modalities of thought that privileges identity over difference, cultivates coherence, and tries to keep play in abeyance. When IR scholars offer interpretations of Thucydides, they are (re)instantiating a vision of their theories – and of theory – that is in accordance with the Law in its most basic form: the insistence on a singular identity that would resonate with the Law.In this paper, I develop this line of critique by reconsidering some prominent interpretations of Thucydides in order to explain the logic of “the Law.” In doing so, I show how else we might approach Thucydides’ legacy.
