Abstract:

Recent research has focused attention on the impact of political institutions on various types of policy outputs. The influence of political institutions has been examined for redistributive policy, health care, and environmental policy just to name a few. This paper looks at the relationship between formal political institutions and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Using cross-national data the paper examines the impact of intellectual property right security from domestic political institutions. It tests a variety of theoretical propositions on the role of government in securing property rights, as well as suggesting unexamined areas of inquiry.
