Abstract:
|
The advent of terrorism perpetrated by extremist elements within Muslim societies has thrust Islam into the spotlight. Most Islamic movements and groups like Al-Qaeda often frame their ideology in terms of the re-establishment of the caliphate, a political institution which unified the Muslim world in the first few centuries of Islam. Perhaps, the most prominent of these groups is the Hizbut Tahrir. While Al-Qaeda attempts to achieve the desired Caliphate by overturning the current world order through acts of terror and violence, HT had been more focused on developing a core group of cadres to prepare for the re-establishment of the Islamic Caliphate. Operating in over 43 countries in the world, HT has recently become prominent in Indonesia and the larger Southeast Asian region. The Hizbut Tahrir branch in Indonesia (HTI) has one of the largest followings in the Muslim World. Sheikh Taqiuddin Nabhani, the founder of Hizbut Tahrir advocated for a universalist Islam as a solution to the problems of the Muslim World. He used the symbolisms of the ummah and the caliphate in a cohesive manner to construct a vision of socio-political change and gain legitimacy and strength in politics. The central role placed by HT in this idea has led some observers to view the organisation as fundamentally at odds with the goals of the nation-state. Using HTI as a case study, this paper attempts to examine whether HTI is really part of a cohesive internationalist Muslim force bent on supplanting national boundaries, as it claims. In doing this, the paper will analyse the discourse of HTI in order to better understand the conception of the khilafah that is being developed by the group, ascertaining the extent to which this transnational collective Muslim identity supersedes or goes against established notions of identity, such as citizenship and national belonging. The research for this paper will combine field and documentary research methods with a qualitative approach. The field research component will be based on data gathered through participatory observation, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). It will also attempt to use primary data from interviews HTI figures, as well as from their speeches and sermons. The documentary research component of the paper will gather data from the groups’ publications, including books, journals, leaflets, brochures, and online materials. These sources include publications of HTI and will include books written by its members, books that are produced by their publishing houses Pustaka Thariqul Izzah , Wahyu Press , Al-Izzah Press, journals such as the Liwa-ul-Haq and Al-Wa’ie, Al-Islam, notes of seminars and conferences as well as audio and video materials produced by the Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia. |
