Abstract:

Today there is an agreement that our world and our lives are being shaped by the conflicting trends of globalization and identity. The rise of an Information Knowledge society of which the digital economy is a key component is significantly changing our lives today. There are a number of Projects that aim at bringing information and communication technologies to the developing world because of the belief in the transforming potential of these technologies. However there is a divergence of opinion with regards to the impact of this with scholars arguing about the world being homogenized of being divergent. In India, through the process of technological advancement, identities are differentiated and overlapped into many forms, rather than fused into one. These identities are not just multiple but are open to constant renegotiation and reformulation in different contexts. In the present paper, we use the data collected in the fieldwork in two Call Centers in Hyderabad, India, between 2004- 06, and argue that in spite of various constraints and limitations in the use of ICT, some women are renegotiating these identities and creating agency to escape the rigid patriarchal control exercised over middle-class daughters. |
