Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: The impacts of gender issues on a country’s successful economic development have been widely recognized as an integral part of policy initiatives at the United Nations (UN) and other development agencies since at least the 1990s. This is evident in the focus on gender issues in health, education, and empowerment as part of the UN Development Program’s Human Development Reports, and in gender equality issues as part of the 2000 Millennium Development Goals. The increased focus on gendered aspects of development are supported by economic studies that have found correlations between increases in women’s earnings and educational levels, and resulting increases in resources allocated toward food, health, and educational services for their children (Behrman and Wolfe 1987; Moser 1993). Clearly gender is an important component of a broader and more integrated approach to successful economic development through poverty alleviating measures including a focus on women’s education and childhood development.
