Abstract:

: While good health is a desired even if elusive outcome, poor health is often a reality particularly among vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations include both native and foreign born citizens in the United States. From an economic perspective poor health diminishes earning potential of income and wages restricting the consumption of many goods and services, health related and otherwise. Poor health limits individuals from performing daily activities, participating in the workforce, earning income to meet daily living needs. In this paper we will examine the changes to individual health status following participation in two welfare programs: the Food Stamp Program (FSP) and Medicaid, for participants who are native and foreign born citizens in the United States. Using data from two waves of the 2004 Survey of Income and Program Participation, our study will focus on changes in health status following one year of program participation.
