Abstract:

There has been a pattern of lower levels of educational aspirations, achievement and attainment among rural youth (Beaulieu et al., 2003; Blackwell and McLaughlin, 1999). Rural youth are often less prepared for post high school education and have lower educational attainment than urban youth (Roscigno and Crowley, 2001; and Teixeira, 1995). However, rural economies depend on a well trained and educated work force (Howley et al., 1996). School systems have much influence over youth, as they work to prepare and socialize youth for entry into the labor force, and federal policies focus on improvement in educational attainment and achievement of students at risk (U.S. Congress, 2001). This study uses the Pennsylvania Rural Youth Education data to examine how student school attachment, perception of school climate, and involvement in high school is associated with their educational pursuits one year out of high school. Descriptive and path analyses are the methods proposed.
