Abstract:

This study examines what factors hinder or facilitate self-disclosure in the development of intercultural and interracial friendships from a social penetration perspective. A total of 252 participants responded to the employed questionnaire. This study found: (1) individualism-collectivism influenced a person’s amount of self-disclosure, intended self-disclosure, and honest/accurate self-disclosure; (2) relational intimacy was positively correlated with depth and frequency of self-disclosure topics and four dimensions of self-disclosure; and (3) self-disclosure was dyadic but not entirely reciprocal.
